The Future Forest Company: Montgreenan

@futureforestmontgreenan
Montgreenan covers 15.2ha within the East Ayrshire lowlands, South West of Glasgow. A small site that packs a lot into its boundaries. It is naturally wet, and has become home to a 33,000 native woodland creation scheme, helping to capture carbon, whilst also creating one of our more threatened and biodiverse woodland types: wet woodland.
Project ID: FFM

Site

Montgreenan lies in open countryside, roughly 3km east of Kilwinning, and 4 km west of Stewarton. The plan for this site is to plant native broadleaf trees to become a valuable carbon store. In doing so will enhance the biodiversity of the site, creating vital habitats as part of a holistic restoration plan; leaving open space for biodiversity within the planted area, alongside ring-fenced areas across the wider site for rewilding and wetland restoration.

Purpose

We are not in the business of creating carbon for carbon’s sake. We carefully consider the wider environmental impact of all our activity. We do not plant monocultures, and work with a ‘right tree in the right place’ ethos, to ensure that our trees thrive in their setting. Alongside this, we aim to support rural communities, improving access to all of our sites, employing local people and use a holistic land management to ensure we work as sensitively and sustainably as we can. Montgreenan is ideal for creating one of our more threatened and biodiverse woodland types: wet woodland. A mixture of bare root cell and cell grown stock has been planted, using a mixture of trench mounding and hand screefing to improve survival rates whilst minimising soil disturbance.
