Cookstove - Hestian Innovation

@newhestianproject
Inefficient stove technologies contribute to deforestation and forest degradation, unsafe conditions in the home, soil erosion, and contribute to the death of 2 million infants each year due to indoor wood-smoke inhalation. Besides that, reduced need for biomass reduces allows women to dedicate their time to other activities as childcare and income generation.

Solution

The New Hestian Project’s improved cookstoves and fuel efficiency projects in Southern Africa directly reduce indoor cooking smoke – one of the leading causes of acute respiratory infections and the top killer of young children worldwide.
Solution

Our interventions are funded via a Greenhouse Gas Reduction system. The better local entrepreneurs perform, the more they are rewarded. We think it’s a clever and innovative system.

The stoves replace traditional 3 Stone Fires that are highly demanding in terms of biomass and releases considerable quantities of smoke.

Our Impact

More than 50% of premature deaths among children under 5 are due to pneumonia caused by particulate matter (soot) inhaled from household air pollution.
The New Hestian Project’s stoves significantly reduce exposure to household air pollution.
A recent survey in Malawi showed that switching from a 3 Stone Fire to a Chitetezo Mbaula stove led to reductions of 46% in particulate matter and 44% in carbon monoxide.

Cookstoves promoted by The Hestian Project are hand made using local materials, fostering local ingenuity and self-reliance.

Advantages

A well-prepared stove user can reduce her family’s woodfuel usage by up to 80%!
Malawi alone suffered 57% deforestation from 1972 to 1992.
Its ongoing deforestation rate is 2.8% per year- a massive environmental challenge.
Much of this is due to cooking and heating with wood and other forms of biomass – this is true for most of Africa.
Africa’s population is growing, forests are being cleared for human settlement and wood is being harvested faster than it is being replanted. The socio-economic implications are scary.
Cleaner cooking can help reverse this trend.
