The Katingan Restoration and Conservation Project (‘The Katingan Project’) protects and restores 149,800 hectares of peatland ecosystems, to offer local communities sustainable sources of income, and to tackle global climate change. The project lies within the districts of Katingan and Kotawaringin Timur in Central Kalimantan Province and covers one of the largest remaining intact peat swamp forests in Indonesia

Vegetation Time-lapse

The importance of this deforestation project can be seen on the right corner and edge of the image. Over the years there is evidence of two illegal forest projects. Both were stopped and vegetation is able to regrow. This shows the effectiveness of the REDD methodology to prevent forest lands, forested wetlands, forested peatlands and tidal wetlands, which would be deforested or degraded in the absence of the project activity.

United Nations: Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015. The SDGs provide a comprehensive framework for addressing the world's most pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges.

Global impact groups play a crucial role in supporting the SDGs by creating mechanisms to mobilise resources, collaborate with stakeholders, and drive collective action toward achieving the goals. These groups have the capacity to leverage their expertise and resources to make a significant positive impact.
