2024 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships: Impact Certificate

Water Polo Australia recognises that our sport is not exempt from the impact of climate change and that our sports impact on the climate is not insignificant. Holding events such as the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships leaves an environmental impact, as we all congregate in one area of Australia to celebrate our game and athletes.

Aligned with our Climate Action Strategy and being 'a team for life' we are giving our community an opportunity to contribute towards leaving a positive impact on this year's event. WPA has taken many steps to make this event the most sustainable and environmentally friendly to date however, as always with large events there is a residual impact.

This Impact Certificates represents 50kg of carbon being sequestered from the atmosphere as well as a contribution towards a kelp plant being planted off the coast of Kalbarri, in Western Australia.

The average Australian CO2e footprint is 50kg per day and we acknowledge that you may or may not have emitted 50kg today, however this is about starting and contributing towards a low carbon economy. The project being supported is a local Queensland carbon project, working under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit accreditation (ACCU). More information can be found 'insert link'.

Canopy Blue is on a mission to restore 100,00 Ha of kelp forest off the Western Australian coast that was lost to a marine heatwave in 2011. In partnership with the University of Western Australia, Canopy Blue is building the world's first hyper - scale seaweed site. Kelp is an important component to enhancing and protecting the oceans ecosystems. Kelp forests improve water quality and provide valuable habitat for sharks and other marine organisms.

We thank you for your support and for joining us on this journey.

This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources (including rootstock and lignotubers) on land that was cleared of vegetation and where regrowth was suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project having commenced. This project is in the Quilpie local government area.

Kelp forests are created by a large canopy forming brown seaweeds. These extensive coastal habitats provide valuable ecological and economic services to humans, including refuges for biodiversity, provision of food and products, and carbon storage. Everclime has worked with Canopy Blue to bring Kelp Reforestation Impact Certificates to market.
