Brand Story
Sustainability Action
Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe made an important step this year to begin their sustainability journey. The objective was to take a first-step to understand part of the emissions footprint for the Cottesloe exhibition. In partnership with Everclime, an assessment of the carbon emission footprint for the Freight, Packaging & Installation of the Cottesloe Exhibition was undertaken.
Utilising the official Climate Active emission calculator Everclime was able to determine the approximate amount of CO2e emitted to transport and install the exhibition for in Cottesloe 2023.

Emission Reduction Efforts
Sculpture by the Sea made several efforts this year to reduce the emissions footprint of the Cottesloe event. Most importantly 69 of 71 sculptures were transported by cargo ship/freighter or heavy gross vehicle truck which are deemed the most efficient transport modes in comparison to airfreight. Installation emissions are being minimised by aiming to utilise cranes, generators and necessary contractors only where absolutely needed.
The broader objective in 2024 will be to complete a comprehensive emissions assessment and understand where further emissions reduction opportunities exist.

Emissions Boundaries
The emissions boundary of the assessment conducted in 2023 for Sculpture by the Sea includes only the emissions emitted for the Freight, Installation and Packaging of the sculptures. The assessment doesn’t include anything outside of this such as visitor attendance or staff and artist travel.
The emissions calculation for the Freight is based on weight and travelled kilometres via a specific mode of transport.
The emissions calculation for the Installation is based on the financial cost of the services multiplied by an emissions factor.
The emissions calculation for Packaging is based on the average cost spent to package each sculpture ready for transport multiplied by an emissions factor.
All emissions factors are provided by the Australian Government's Climate Active calculator.
